Typewritten letter addressed "to whom it may concern: and especially my own family." The item was written in Mesa, Arizona and dated 24 April 1916. It was copied by S.C. Richardson on 1 June 1931. Hakes heard of the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857 before he moved ot Parowan, Utah in 1858. He writes with the intention of showing that Brigham Young, second president of the Mormon Church, had nothing to do with the massacre. He quotes Young as saying to Hakes: "The time has come when they will try John D. Lee and not the Mormon Church, and that is all we have ever wanted." Hakes was present at the execution of John D. Lee and gives an account of what Lee said before he was shot. Lee regreted that his "fiends," the leaders of the Mormon Church including Brigham Young, had not come to comfort him in his "time of trouble."
